性空法師，1922年02月05日出生。十四歲到姜堰觀音庵出家，依靜庵法師為僧；1941年在無錫南禪寺受具足戒後，考入鎮江焦​​山佛學院，受教於仁山、守培、芝峰、雪煩等高僧；1962年，性空應蘇州西園寺明開方丈之邀，到西園寺任僧值；1963年被調到寒山寺當監院。文革期間，性空用泥巴將碑廊裡岳飛、唐寅、文徵明、俞樾等人的詩碑糊起來，然後貼上紙，並在上面寫滿了標語，在裝滿佛經的藏經櫃上貼上偉人像，將五百羅漢悄悄藏在密室裡，使寺裡的佛寶不被損毀。1968年，性空被迫還俗。1978年秋，性空受禮請重返寒山寺。1984年秋，性空繼任寒山寺方丈。經過多年的辛勤操持和苦心經營，寒山寺在殿宇修復、佛像重光、文物保護以及恢復叢林制度、培養僧伽人才等方面取得了顯著成就。2002年八月，寒山寺隆重舉行性空大和尚榮陞寒山寺法主和尚暨秋爽法師榮任寒山寺方丈升座慶典活動。
