Garcia launches score with no less than three major motifs coralled in single opening fanfare: angled trumpet theme heralds later action, ravishing string melody quotes love theme, concluding florid turn in woodwinds introduces oft-recurring motif for locale. Quickly following is dynamic main credits with noble Atlantis theme. Interesting idea: theme plays ostensibly in minor but favors bold major harmonies. Result is regal quasi-processional. Stunning! Love theme unfolds as sinewy line winding up and down , over and through gentle harmony. Garcia also draws upon elements of earlier George Pal effort THE TIME MACHINE in aggressive action material. Score uses standard symphony setup but generates additional interest from prominent harp, numerous transparent sequences for woodwinds.\n\n \n\nCD also offers suite (29:39) from 1968 George Pal sci-fi production THE POWER, scored by Miklos Rozsa, directed by Byron Haskin, starring George Hamilton. Suite reprises material heard in earlier issues of score but gains advantage in first-ever authorization by studio plus superior packaging, liner notes. Rozsa aims for color with standard orchestra enhanced by gypsy-flavored cimbalom. Excitement is keynote! For brief respite Rozsa offers beautiful sequence for solo guitar in Spanish idiom.
