春秋戰國時期，人們已將薰草、古蘭、鬱金、茅香等香草用於香身、薰香、辟穢、祛蟲、醫療養生等許多領域，並有佩帶、熏燒、熏浴、飲服等多種用法，插戴香草、佩帶香囊、沐浴香湯等做法漸次興起。隨著薰香風氣的逐漸流行，專門用以薰香的熏爐也應運而生。考古發現證實，至遲在戰國時期，一些熏爐的製作已達到了相當精湛的程度。
