吳雲根(1892-1969年)，又名吳芝萊。1892年生於宜興和橋，14歲拜汪升義(汪生義)為師。1915年到山西省平定縣平民陶器廠任技師、1929年受聘於南京中央大學陶瓷科當技術員、1931年受聘於江蘇省立陶瓷職業學校窯業科任技師、1954年進入蜀山陶業生產合作社、1955年11月開始為紫砂廠招收第一批學員傳授紫砂製作技藝、1956年被江蘇省人民政府任命為紫砂"技術輔導員" ，成為著名的"紫砂七大名藝人"之一。為當今紫砂藝術界培養出了如高海庚、汪寅仙、呂堯臣以及葛明仙、何挺初、范洪泉等極有影響的紫砂藝術大師和名家。
1969年，文革浩動無情落在吳雲根頭上，在"清理"、"追查"、"莫須有"問題中，吳雲根由于想不通而在宜興紫砂工藝廠上吊自殺身亡，釀成悲劇，享年77歲。而直到去世，吳雲根未給子女們私下留存一件他個人的作品。
