1928年生，雕刻家、畫家、書法家，江蘇無錫人。 1947年考入國立北平藝專，1951年畢業於中央美術學院雕塑系，留校任教。 1953年赴蘇留學，進入列寧格勒列賓美術學院雕塑系。 1959年畢業獲藝術家稱號，回國後繼續任教中央美術學院。 1986年升為正教授並任雕塑系系主任。 1989年退休，曾任國家教委藝術教育委員會委員和北京市人民政府專業顧問。 現為中央美院教授、學術委員會常設小組成員。 中國工藝美術學會雕塑委員會會長，中國城雕全國藝委會常委，中國美術家協會雕塑委員會委員。
