正面圖案：孫中山面向左側頭像、發行年份（右至左）、月桂形幾何圖紋一圈。
背面圖案：「臺灣省」地圖與字樣（上至下）、「伍角」（右至左）字樣、月桂形幾何圖紋一圈。
發行日期：民國38年（1949年）12月1日。
民國71年（1982年）12月8日起停止流通。
年版（首發）：民國38年發行地區：臺灣
直徑：24公釐。
重量：5.0公克。
幣邊：全絲邊。
民國三十八年(1949年)，國共發生內戰，導致惡性通貨膨脹，法幣及金圓券政策崩潰，貨幣流通極度困難，為擺脫困境，國民黨政府決定恢復銀本位制，許多省份重新開鑄銀幣，38年五角銀幣乃其中之一。
正面中央鐫孫中山先生半身側面像上鐫“中華民國三十八年”年號。
背面中央鐫台灣省地圖及“台灣省”省名，左右分鐫“伍角”。 
38年五角是政府在台發行的第一版輔幣之一，同時也是唯一僅有的流通銀幣，鑄造數量兩仟柒佰餘萬枚，大概是所有流通輔幣鑄量最少的。
