破魔弓歷史悠久，被認為起源於大和時代（公元 647 年左右）宮廷舉行的新年活動“斜裡”（用弓射箭的儀式）。當時，弓被認為是“具有辟邪之力的聖物”，因此在宮廷的各種儀式上都會使用弓。

大約在鎌倉時代，它們開始像今天一樣被展示為“辟邪的護身符”，當時有將弓箭送給男孩的習俗，這對武士武士來說很重要。這個習俗逐漸流傳到民間，不知不覺就被廣泛採用，作為新年時擺在男孩家裡的吉祥物。
