1989 年 8 月 12、13 日在莫斯科列寧體育場舉行的「莫斯科和平音樂節」可說是 80 年代音樂界的一大盛事，參與演出的藝人全是當時世界上當紅的重金屬團體及蘇聯當紅的重金屬樂團。這不但是蘇聯有史以來第一次最盛大的音樂會，同時也是西方和東方的重金屬樂團第一次以這樣的方式演出。而這張專輯《 Stairway to Heaven / Highway to Hell 通往天堂的樓梯、通往地獄的高速公路 》則在一個非營利組織機構Make A Difference Foundat - ION (MADF) 的名義下收錄了 8 首錄音作品及部分演唱會實況，MADF成立的宗旨即在激勵年輕人反藥品、反酗酒，所有的錄音皆是當年深受藥品或酒精毒害的藝人的作品，史的整張專輯更具意義。
