Gnarled oak encloses Mercier's 12-line refusal to accept the French Parliament's total exoneration of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, earlier convicted of spying for Germany by forgery, perjury and fraud. Dreyfus as a Jeish officer, hose prosecution triggered a huge upsurge of anti-Semitism in France. Mercier and many others rejected all proof of Dreyfus' innocence and remained heroes to Right-ing Frenchmen as exemplified by this medal, paid for by \"National Subscription.\" Deep bron, struck by Janvier-Duval ith triangular edgemark.
