原本經營高級男女服飾的「巴黎世家」，其品牌名稱並不是因為它誕生於法國巴黎，創始人其實是一位出生於西班牙Guetaria小漁村、名為Cristobal Balenciaga的偉大天才設計師，孩童時期就對時裝設計表現出濃厚興趣，在他十三歲時，偶然遇到西班牙的侯爵夫人Casa Torre，年紀輕輕的Cristobal Balenciaga竟敢對侯爵夫人的高貴打扮品頭論足，但他極具見地的批評讓侯爵夫人對這少年刮目相看，還破例穿上他所縫製的晚裝出席宴會，沒想到頗獲好評，因此侯爵夫人便大力資助他開設自己的裁縫店，店名就取為BALENCIAGA（巴黎世家）。 從此，Balenciaga在西班牙的時裝壇上漸漸展露鋒芒，後來因西班牙在1937年爆發內戰，Balenciaga才遷居巴黎開設了時裝店，他設計的時裝被喻為革命性的潮流燈塔，很多名流貴族都指定穿著他的時裝，這些忠實客戶包括西班牙王后、比利時王后、溫莎公爵夫人、摩洛哥王后等名人。而第二次世界大戰後的法國時裝界，人們把它與Dior相提並論，此時的巴黎世家代表了無與倫比的高傲與優雅，引領Baby Doll娃娃裝風潮。 雖然創始人Balenciaga在1968年宣佈退休，結束品牌經營，並於1972年逝世，但巴黎世家並沒有因此而停止它極富創造力的設計，終於在1987年眾人期盼下重現時尚舞臺，由新銳設計師Nicolas Ghesquiere接任設計大權，Gucci集團更於2000年將其收購，為古老的巴黎世家注入既未來又復古的新浪漫創意；也正是此時，Nicolas所發表的一款機車包，在時尚圈掀起了前所未有的風暴。由於其造型特殊，「機車包」立刻一炮而紅，為巴黎世家打開了另一條時尚界的康莊大道，讓原來垂垂老矣的巴黎世家再次躋身時尚潮流指標之列，並由女裝擴展到男裝、皮件和香水等，但仍然堅持著它一貫的設計風格和崇尚簡潔清純、年輕優雅和造型考究的原始理念，Nicolas可以說是巴黎世家史上的傳奇人物。 至今已邁入七十幾個年頭的巴黎世家，其設計師Nicolas Ghesquiere曾經說過：「巴黎世家不是提供流行讓人們選擇，而是告訴他們『這就是我對時尚的觀點，接不接受隨你們，我才不會浪費唇舌辯解。』」，這就是巴黎世家的風格 ─ 絕對的『新』、絕對的『與眾不同』。
